What's on this sheet

  • Large trace-over swar: अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ
  • Dotted guides for stroke direction
  • Circle-the-letter swar recognition game
  • Spacing sized for early Hindi pre-writing

This Nursery Hindi worksheet introduces the first swar of the varnamala — अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ — with large trace-over letters and a circle-the-letter game. Say each swar aloud together before tracing.

स्वर अभ्यास works best in short, happy sessions: one sheet, six letters, lots of praise. For fresh swar, vyanjan, and varnamala-mix sheets every day, generate them in the Homework Buddy app.

Age fit: Nursery and early Jr KG in Hindi-medium or bilingual homes, or any child beginning varnamala before vyanjan. If English ABC tracing is still hard, do this sheet on alternate days, not the same night.

Ten-minute session script: “Pehle awaaz, phir ungli, phir pencil.” Chant one swar, trace together, child traces alone, tick one find-the-letter item, sticker or high-five, done.

Common mistakes: Correcting every stroke while the child is still forming grip; comparing to cousins who ‘already know Hindi’; skipping speech and only tracing silently.

When to stop: When the child reverses letters from fatigue, or refuses to say the sound aloud. Stop mid-row — varnamala is a marathon across months, not one evening.

Indian context tip: Point out swar on biscuit packets, auto-rickshaw stickers, or school gate boards on the walk home. The worksheet anchors what they already see in the neighbourhood.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Say each swar aloud twice before tracing — अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ with a familiar word (अनार, आम).
  2. Trace one letter with your finger in the air, then let your child trace on the sheet.
  3. Use the find-the-letter game only after at least two swar are traced — keep it playful.
  4. If your child mixes Hindi and English mid-session, stay calm; many urban Nursery children code-switch daily.
  5. Finish after six letters or 10 minutes — repeat tomorrow rather than pushing through tired tracing.

Frequently asked questions

Which swar should my child learn first?

Start with अ and आ — they are visually distinct and begin familiar words like अनार and आम. This sheet covers the first six swar in order.

Is this Hindi worksheet free to print?

Yes — download the PDF and print it on A4. The Homework Buddy app can generate unlimited fresh Hindi varnamala worksheets.

Hindi medium or English medium — who should use this sheet?

Both. English-medium Nursery children often meet Hindi in conversation class; this sheet supports that without exam pressure.

Should we teach matras on the same day?

Not yet. Solid swar shapes and sounds first; matras come once अ–औ feel familiar.

My child knows English letters better. Is Hindi too early?

Not too early if sessions stay short. Separate Hindi and English tracing on different days to reduce mix-ups.

Do we need a Hindi pencil grip trainer?

No special tool — a short pencil and calm pacing beat gadgets for Nursery swar practice.
